8/18/2023 0 Comments Lights burn out![]() ![]() Luckily with more current light strings such as LED Light strings, they do not work the same way and only require a single replacement of anyone bulb. ![]() However, sometimes these shunts malfunction, and they short-circuit which ends up blowing off your whole light set! If this happens, make sure it is unplugged before you fix this problem! This makes replacing them relatively simple if you know what you’re doing. You simply just have to take out the old bulb and put in a new one. Basically, this means you do not need to replace the entire strand of lights when one bulb burns out because there’s another pathway for electricity flow! A shunt is an electrical connection between two points on the same circuit to divert excess current away from a lower resistance path, so it can carry more electricity at once. Some string lights are made with bulbs that have a shunt. However, not all strands work this way! Do String Lights Die If One Bulb Goes Out? Strings lights are lit up by individual little bulbs that come together on a single strand and usually, they stay lit when one is broken or goes out. Some people even use them year-round by hanging them up on their roofs or outside their windows! However, they do have a finite lifespan, so you do have to take care of them properly for them to last a long time. They can be used to decorate trees, houses (exterior and interior), wreaths, garlands, etc., for the holiday season. String lights are Christmas lights that usually come in long strands. Not all string lights are built the same and this isn’t the case with all types of string lights so let’s take a look at when your whole string may die from one dead bulb vs string lights that only require the replacement of a single bulb but work throughout. This may not seem like a big deal but can become very frustrating after multiple times happening. But, what happens when you have string lights and one bulb goes out? Do the other bulbs go out too? If so, that could mean a lot of work for you! You will need to fix the light or replace it with a new one. After re-wiring it, I hadn't replaced a single bulb in over 4 years (then I moved).Decorating your home is supposed to be a fun experience. In one particular case, I had a 6-bulb hanging lamp and the bulbs lasted about 2 months. really liked it, then I re-wired it with sturdy copper wire, quality sockets and good bulbs. If this did not fix the problem, I would replace the fixture with a different one - unless, of course, the Mrs. ![]() Probably 3/4 of the time, Checking these things (magically) fixed the problem. Is there a ground wire in the fixture? If so, is it connected properly?Īre there other fixtures connected to this one?īeing an engineer, I "doinked" with all of these. More wires on 1 connection => more potential issues.Īre the wires pinched when the fixture is attached to the wall? That makes the interconnection easy to mess up.)Īre the wires all jammed into the J-Box, or is there some extra room? Jammed wires can easily "wiggle" while (re-)installing the fixture.Īre the wire nuts the right size? Are they connected properly? (Can you pull them off without twisting them?)Īre all 3 sockets wired individually to the load (causing 4 black wires in the J-box: 1 for the load and 1 for each bulb), or are they connected internally and only 1 connection to the load (causing 2 black wires in the J-box). Is it Aluminum wire or copper wire? (Copper is better).ĭoes the wire seem thin/brittle or is it firm/sturdy? Is the wire solid or stranded? (Sometimes it's solid wire in the wall and stranded in the fixture. (Note, this is not just the wires themselves, but also the connections and locations of the wires). And, I have had cheap bulbs die in one socket but not the other). When I have had this problem, I noticed that sometimes it was simply a cheap light bulb. I agree with Beal's Answer (socket) and comment (heat). ![]()
